Last year, many of you will recall that MANY and the New York State Council on the Arts Museum Program collaborated with Kimberli Gant, a graduate student and former staff member of the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts, on a survey looking at the demographic make-ups of staff, board and volunteers in NYS museums and heritage organizations. Kim's research resulted in a poster session presentation at the College Art Association's annual conference last February -- here is a storyboard of her presentation.
The survey results reinforce what many of us know to be the case regarding the diversity of the museum field. We now have some quantitative data that might help propel us toward creating new pathways for diversifying staff, boards and volunteer corps.
