    Putnam History Museum, Cold Spring, New York

    Organization/Project Background:The Putnam History Museum (established in 1906) is located in Cold Spring, New York. The mission of the PHM is to collect, preserve, interpret, and present the history of Putnam County, Philipstown, the West Point Foundry, and the Hudson Highlands. Through exhibitions, programs, and events, the museum uses its collections to engage the community with the vibrant history of our region, and to foster greater understanding of the role it has played in the growth of our nation.

    In order to promote the advancement of humanities programming during the COVID-19 pandemic, the PHM will create several outdoor and online programming initiatives for museum visitors to enjoy and learn from at their own socially distant space, pace, and time. The PHM’s Socially Distant Outdoor and Online Programming Initiative will have four main components: 1) Creation of rotating outdoor exhibitions on the museum’s grounds 2) Digital content that will be accessible via the PHM’s website to complement these exhibitions (content will also be available via social media channels) 3) Outdoor public educational programming (when social distancing guidelines permit) 4) Educational components that will be utilized by teachers and students in the Fall of 2020.

    Position Description: 

    The Putnam History Museum is seeking a temporary museum educator to serve as the project manager for a National Endowment for the Humanities grant-funded project.

    The Project Manager will:

    • Assist the PHM staff in implementing outdoor exhibitions for museum visitors to experience in the Fall of 2020.
    • Create virtual learning resources to complement the outdoor exhibitions. These resources will be used by teachers, students, and the general public.
    • Create and implement 2-3 outdoor and socially distant public educational programs

    Employment Type: The position is for 25 to 30 hours per week. Competitive hourly wage determined by experience. Position will begin immediately and will end December 31, 2020.


    Bachelor’s/Master’s in public history, education, museum studies, history, or related fields.

    Applicants with relevant course work and demonstrated experience will also be considered.

    Experience with Microsoft Office, WordPress (or similar), Social Media, and Constant Contact (or similar).
