    The Thomas Cole National Historic Site seek a full time Visitor Center Manager. The position offers the opportunity to join a dynamic team at a beautiful historic site in Catskill, New York, in the scenic Hudson Valley. The position includes a competitive hourly rate based upon skills and experience, and a competitive benefits package.

    The Visitor Center (VC) Manager is responsible for visitor-oriented operations in the Visitor Center, management of the physical and online gift shops, and regular updating of the organization’s website and other online platforms. The VC Manager reports to the Manager of Visitor Engagement regarding visitor services and gift shop management, and to the Associate Director on website and marketing tasks.

    The ideal candidate is interested in art, history, the local area, and retail business management. This position requires excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, analytical thinking, and the use of personal computers and mobile devices. The ability to work both independently and cooperatively with other members of the education staff is essential.

    Essential functions and responsibilities:

        Provide professional and friendly service to visitors

        Ring in orders and track inventory and sales using Square

        Manage visitor reservations in Eventbrite

        Maintain and develop the online Shopify store

        Update thomascole.org in WordPress

        Use a spreadsheet program to record and analyze quantitative information

    From April to November, the VC Manager works primarily in the Visitor Center, where s/he welcomes and orients visitors, processes ticket and gift shop sales, and provides accurate and helpful information about the Historic Site and surrounding area. S/he also oversees the VC staff, manages inventory, orders products, fulfills online orders, keeps records, submits invoices, receipts, and sales reports to the Bookkeeper, and updates the organization’s online platforms with current information.

    From December to March, when the VC is closed, the VC Manager continues to maintain the website and online store, fulfills online orders, analyzes past gift shop performance, and develops plans and strategies to expand and improve the retail operation.

    The VC Manager position requires approximately 35 hours per week. Specific duties and hours vary throughout the year, as outlined below.

    January to April  (30 hours/week)

    ·         Fulfill online store orders; send weekly online store sales reports to Bookkeeper

    ·         Maintain & update online store and POS systems

    ·         Improve online store (add products, streamline fulfillment, produce social media content)

    ·         Prepare annual gift shop purchasing plan

    ·         Place orders from vendors according to purchasing plan

    ·         Plan and work with Facilities Manager to execute VC interior improvements

    ·         Post all upcoming season’s tickets to online ticketing system

    ·         Assist Associate Director with marketing and website updates

    May to October (40 hours/week)

    ·         Fulfill online orders; send weekly online store sales reports to Bookkeeper

    ·         Meet & communicate regularly with education staff

    ·         Greet, orient, guide, and converse with visitors

    ·         Process ticket sales in POS system

    ·         Process online ticket sales

    ·         Track tour ticket sales; send monthly attendance reports to Manager of Visitor Engagement

    ·         Assist shoppers, tidy sales floor & restock merchandise as needed

    ·         Prepare daily cash deposits & deliver to Business Office

    ·         Get change from bank as needed for POS till

    ·         Track inventory and reorder products as needed according to purchasing plan

    ·         Answer visit- and shop-related phone calls and email inquiries

    ·         Train education staff to perform daily VC operations

    ·         Assist Associate Director with marketing and website updates


    November to December (30 hours/week)

    ·         Touring season regular operations & management as above until closing day

    ·         Perform physical inventory count and update records

    ·         Pack and store merchandise for winter

    ·         Prepare year-end reports, including attendance, inventory, & gift shop sales

    ·         Fulfill online orders; weekly online sales reports to Bookkeeper

    ·         Assist Associate Director with marketing and website updates

    Work Schedule

    ·         November to April: Monday to Friday, 8:30–3:00 (flexible)

    ·         May to October: Wednesday to Sunday, 9:00–5:30
